چکیده

We show that cosmic-ray observations set a model-independent upper bound of En Fn,2 310 GeV/cm s sr to the intensity of high-energy neutrinos produced by photo-meson ~or p-p! interactions in sources of size not much larger than the proton photo-meson ~or p-p! mean-free-path. This bound applies, in particular, to neutrino production by either AGN jets or GRBs. The upper limit is two orders of magnitude below the intensity predicted in some popular AGN jet models and therefore contradicts the theory that the cosmic gamma-ray background is due to photo-pion interactions in AGN jets. The upper bound is consistent with our predictions from GRB models. The predicted intensity from GRBs is EdN/dE;0.3 310 GeV/cm s sr for 10 eV,E,10 eV; we also derive the expected intensity at higher energy. @S0556-2821~99!03902-8#

Astrophysical Neutrino Event Rates and Sensitivity for Neutrino Telescopes

Spectacular processes in astrophysical sites produce high-energy cosmic rays which are further accelerated by Fermi-shocks into a power-law spectrum. These, in passing through radiation fields and matter, produce neutrinos. Neutrino telescopes are designed with large detection volumes to observe such astrophysical sources. A large volume is necessary because the fluxes and cross-sections are sm...

High energy astrophysical neutrinos: The upper bound is robust

We elucidate the physical basis for the upper bound on high energy neutrino fluxes implied by the observed cosmic ray flux. We stress that the bound is valid for neutrinos produced either by p ,g reactions or by p 2p(n) reactions in sources which are optically thin for high energy protons to photo-meson and nucleonmeson interactions. We show that the upper bound is robust and conservative. The ...

High energy astrophysical neutrinos

High energy neutrinos with energy typically greater than tens of thousands of GeV may originate from several astrophysical sources. The sources may include, for instance, our galaxy, the active centers of nearby galaxies, as well as possibly the distant sites of gamma ray bursts. I briefly review some aspects of production and propagation as well as prospects for observations of these high ener...

High Energy Neutrinos: Sources and Fluxes

We discuss briefly the potential sources of high energy astrophysical neutrinos and show estimates of the neutrino fluxes that they can produce. A special attention is paid to the connection between the highest energy cosmic rays and astrophysical neutrinos.

Observations of high energy neutrinos with water/ice neutrino telescopes

The search for high energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin is being conducted today with two water/ice Cherenkov experiments. New instruments of higher performance are now in construction and more are in the R&D phase. No sources have been found to date. Upper limits on neutrino fluxes are approaching model predictions. Results are reported on the search for point sources, diffuse fluxes, gam...
